SUMMARY:Juneau Icefield Research Program
LOCATION:Juneau\, AK\, USA
DESCRIPTION:
JIRP is an expeditionary field science school for undergraduate and earl
y-stage graduate students interested in polar science. 30-35 students trave
rse 110 km across the Juneau Icefield from Juneau, AK to Atlin, BC each sum
mer, learning about field glaciology, geophysics, glacial geology, climatol
ogy/meteorology and a number of other cryosphere-related topics from 20 fac
ulty over two months. Students also gain glacier mountaineering, wilderness
first aid, and other expeditionary training during this experience. We typ
ically have six to eight focused research projects of current scientific in
terest, led by faculty, in which students actively participate. Recent proj
ects have focused on radio-glaciology and other geophysical studies, isotop
e geochemistry, glacier mass balance, biogeochemistry, glacial geology, eco
logy, and geomatics/remote sensing. Summer-long field research student proj
ects supervised by the faculty will culminate in presentations at AGU or ot
her similar meetings. More information and the online application form can
be accessed at http://juneauicefield.c
om/.

*The 2018 field season will run from June 19th to Au
gust 16th.*

Program details: <a href="http://juneauicefield.
