SUMMARY:Antarctic Surface Hydrology and Future Ice-shelf Stability
LOCATION:Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory\, Palisades\, New York
DESCRIPTION:Workshop on Antarctic Surface Hydrology and Future Ice-shelf Stability\nat
Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory, Palisades, New York, on February 21st to
23rd, 2018.\nA number of research groups are currently examining processes
related to coupling between surface meltwater production and future Antarct
ic ice loss. Recent studies have suggested that surface hydrological system
s in Antarctica may expand and proliferate this century. Meanwhile, numeric
al models of the Antarctic Ice Sheet that incorporate meltwater's impact on
ice shelves, predict Antarctic contributions of up to a meter of global se
a-level rise this century in response to atmospheric warming.\nGiven the em
erging interest in surface hydrology, ice-shelf stability and future sea-le
vel rise, it is vital for the scientific community to come together to iden
tify and address critical knowledge gaps in this field.\nThis workshop will
bring together scientists with expertise in ice-sheet dynamics, glacial hy
drology, climatology and other disciplines in order to move the community t
owards answering several fundamental questions raised by observations of An
tarctic surface hydrological processes. \n\nThese could include: \nWhat cli
mate dynamics are responsible for surface meltwater generation in Antarctic
a? \nWhat controls the spatiotemporal distribution of meltwater ponds on An
tarctic ice shelves? \nWhere is meltwater generated, where does it pond tod
ay and how will this change this century? \nWhat controls the movement of w
ater across the ice surface and into the sub-surface of Antarctic ice shelv
es?\nHow will meltwater impact the stability of ice shelves this century?\n
Specifically we aim to: \n(1) Establish the state-of-the-science of Antarct
ic surface hydrology,\n(2) Identify key research questions and future prior
ities in this field, and\n(3) Facilitate collaborations\nThe workshop will
consist of short science talks, poster sessions and group discussions on va
rious topics within this broad field. Oral and poster presentations could r
eport modelling studies, remote sensing, fieldwork, laboratory experiments
related to any aspect of the dynamics of Antarctic surface meltwater and ic
e shelves.\nIf you would like to attend please email abstracts (300 word li
mit), including affiliation information to Frances Simpson (This email addr
