Lancaster Data Science Institute are hosting a one-day training course on Tuesday September 5th in conjunction wi th the International Glaciological Society British Branch 2017 meeting. Qua ntitative analysis relies on numerical methods, however methodological deve lopments in the ‘data sciences’ (e.g. maths/computing) are not often brough t directly into polar research. This training event aims to encourage the a doption of cutting-edge data science methods by polar researchers. The day will provide an overview of statistical and computational methods which can be employed by polar scientists and will deliver in-depth practical sessio ns on the application of changepoint analysis and extreme value theory to p olar data. There will also be an opportunity to develop ideas around the ap plication of data science techniques to your own data with feedback given b y Lancaster's experts in Environmental Data Science. The course also offers the opportunity to develop skills in analysis using R, and working in a cl oud-based environment, through the practical components of the course.
< p>The workshop will be held from 09:00 – 17:45 on Tuesday 5th Septe mber in Lancaster Post-graduate Statistics Centre. Note that this is the day preceding the British Branch 2017 meeting.Registr ation is free via the eventbrite link below, but places are limited; priority will be given to PhD students but other early career researcher s are encouraged to apply. For those arriving the day before (Monday 4th Se ptember), on-campus en-suite B and B accommodation has been reserved at a c ost of £38.50 per night.
Prior knowledge of R is not required, but at tendees should have a basic statistical awareness, for example an understan ding of linear regression and the concept of a probability distribution.
