SUMMARY:APECS-ARICE Webinar: Tracing Permafrost Carbon across the Beaufort Shelf - Satellites, water, microbes and mud
LOCATION:Online
DESCRIPTION:The Arctic Research Icebreaker Consortium (ARICE (https://www.arice-h2020.e
u/)) and Association of Polar Early Career Scientists (<a href="https://www
 .apecs.is" target="_blank" rel="noopener">APECS</a>) invite for a webinar o
n “Tracing Permafrost Carbon across the Beaufort Shelf - Satellites, water,
  microbes and mud” on 27 January 2022 from 15:00 – 16:00 pm GMT.\nThe PeCaB
eau (Permafrost Carbon on the Beaufort Shelf) project aims to track the mov
ement and transformation of material from permafrost thaw along the land-to
-ocean continuum. This multi-disciplinary effort investigates the sediment
column between subsea permafrost and the seafloor, the water column, the at
mosphere and the interfaces between these three units in the Beaufort Sea.
By studying the sources, quantities and the quality of organic matter in th
e water column and in sediments, we aim to improve assessments of the Beauf
ort shelf as a carbon source or sink, and place these outcomes in the conte
xt of the Holocene paleo-environment and transgressed permafrost. Sampling
operations took place in September 2021 on the Canadian Coast Guard Ship Am
undsen funded by the ARICE program.\nSpeakers are Jorien Vonk (Vrije Univer
siteit Amsterdam), Lisa Bröder (ETH Zurich) and Michael Fritz (Alfred Wegen
er Institute).\n Moderation: Franziska Pausch (ARICE, AWI &amp; APECS)\nTo
join the webinar, please register via this link (https://us02web.zoom.us/we
binar/register/WN_uuSMxMM7Qy6PPiMM2QBCkw) and you will receive the link to
 the webinar afterwards.\n
