SUMMARY:2nd Asian Conference on Permafrost 2017
LOCATION:Sapporo\, Japan
DESCRIPTION:Organizers of the 2nd Asian Conference on Permafrost (ACOP2017) announce a
call for registration and abstract submissions. The conference will convene
2-6 July 2017 in Sapporo, Japan.\nThe conference, hosted by the Internatio
nal Permafrost Association (IPA), covers all aspects of frozen ground, both
permafrost and seasonal frost, and its related natural and technological t
opics.\nDeadlines:\nFebruary 2017: Acceptance of abstract and support for y
 oung researchers\nMarch 2017: Deadline of Early Bird registration\nJune 201
7: Final deadline of registration\nProposed sessions:\n• PERIGLACIAL GEOMOR
PHOLOGY\n• GROUND ICE DYNAMICS\n• MOUNTAIN PERMAFROST AND GEOHAZARDS\n• PER
MAFROST ECO-HYDROLOGY\n• PERMAFROST MAPPING AND TECHNIQUES\n• CLIMATE CHANG
E AND THE CARBON BALANCE IN PERMAFROST\n• FROZEN GROUND PHYSICS\n• FROZEN G
 ROUND ENGINEERING\n• ASIAN FROZEN GROUND\n• PALEO-PERMAFROST\n• EXTRAZONAL
PERMAFROST AND SEASONAL FROST\n• LIVING AND WORKING ON FROZEN GROUND:\n• CU
LTURAL AND HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE OF PERMAFROST\n• OUTREACH/EDUCATION, HIS
 TORY\nPlenary Sessions are updated:\n(4 July AM)\nTheme: “Deep permafrost a
nd global influences”\nSpeaker: Dr. Anna Liljedahl (University of Alaska Fa
irbanks)\n-Dr. Liljedahl combines field measurements, numerical modeling an
d remote sensing to explore the storage and flow of water within the Arctic
and subarctic landscapes. Her research often follows a system perspective,
linking watershed-scale hydrology to permafrost, geomorphology, glaciers,
vegetation, carbon and/or climate. Based in Fairbanks, Alaska, Liljedahl co
llaborates with colleagues active at Canadian and Russian sites, while she
takes advantage of doing fieldwork in her own backyard.\n(5 July AM)\nTheme
: “Permafrost in human dimension”\nSpeaker: Dr. Arne Instanes (the Universi
ty Centre in Svalbard (UNIS))\n-Dr. Instanes has a wide background from res
earch and consulting within the fields of geotechnical engineering and cold
regions engineering. He is an adjunct professor at the University Centre i
n Svalbard and Western Norway University of Applied Sciences. His major fie
lds of work relate to: permafrost engineering and frozen ground engineering
, soil mechanics and geotechnical engineering, cold regions field investiga
tions, foundation engineering, slope stability analyses, and climate change
impact assessments.\nPre- and post-conference field excursions options wil
l be offered, dependent on the numbers of participants, to the following de
stinations:\nDaisetsu Mountains, Japan; artificially frozen ground sites, T
okyo and Fukushima-daiichi nuclear power plant; Mongolia; Kamchatka Peninsu
