SUMMARY:4th edition of the postgraduate course Glaciology of the Southern Andes by IANIGLA
LOCATION:Online
DESCRIPTION:We are glad to announce the 4th edition of the postgraduate course Glaciolo
gy of the Southern Andes, by Instituto Argentino de Nivología, Glaciología
y Ciencias Ambientales (IANIGLA- CONICET), which will be held "virtually" f
rom the 23 of August to the 3 of September 2021. \nAPPLICATION DEADLINE: th
e 3 of August 2021\nThe course is intended to provide a comprehensive overv
iew of the physics of glaciers with examples from the Southern Andes. Due t
o his extent, the Southern Andes (22°S-54°S) span a broad range of latitude
and altitude, which dictates a wide variety of temperature and precipitati
on conditions, resulting in a significant climatic diversity that hosts num
erous and different types of glaciers. We will exploit these differences to
understand better the importance of glaciers and glacier changes in local
to regional human activities.\nKey topics include:\n\n - Climatology of the
Southern Andes\n - The history of glaciology and glaciological discoveries
along the Southern Andes\n - Glacier mass balance and hydrology in the Sou
thern Andes\n - Glacier dynamics, surging and tidewater glaciers in the Sou
thern Andes\n - Remote Sensing in glaciology\n - Glacier geology along the
Southern AndesDuring the course, lectures will be given each morning. The c
oncepts will be consolidated with computational exercises each afternoon, b
ased on examples from the different climatic regions of the Southern Andes.
\nUnfortunately, due to the COVID-19 travel restrictions, this edition wil
l be entirely virtual. \nThe course is taught in Spanish by glaciologists a
nd climatologists from IANIGLA and is intended for postgraduate students wi
th research subjects related to glaciology. Also, graduate students or tech
nicians from public or private agencies related to mountain hydrology or na
tural resource management of the Southern Andes are welcome to apply.\nHere
