SUMMARY:Permafrost Carbon Feedback Intervention RoadMap Dialogues
LOCATION:Online
DESCRIPTION:The Canadian Permafrost Association in partnership with Institute for Break
through Energy Technologies CCC Ltd. (IBET) is exited to present this dialo
gue series of its PCF Action Group.\nThe global effort to address climate c
hange currently lacks a technical or policy framework that adequately accou
nts for major feedback mechanisms, including the accelerating thaw in globa
l permafrost. Accordingly, for the first time ever, world-class experts are
convening in a series of workshops to begin creating a PCF Intervention Ro
adMap - an action guide for policy makers and investors. This process is in
tended as a regional supplement to global decarbonization efforts and a com
plement to initiatives addressing the local geophysical impacts of permafro
st thaw. Permafrost in Arctic tundra and in high-elevation regions has in p
ast been one of the world's largest carbon sinks, storing twice as much car
bon as the atmosphere. Warming global temperatures, however, are accelerati
ng permafrost thaw, turning the sink into a source. The PCF Action Group wi
ll be examining technologies and methods of reducing permafrost thaw and/or
limiting emissions where thaw cannot be reduced, and weighing their relati
ve impacts - to identify the most promising areas for research and developm
ent and to create a first-draft PCF Intervention RoadMap to assist policyma
kers and green investors.\nThe PCF Intervention Roadmap will consist of fou
 r 90-minute Zoom-based Dialogues:\n 1. Opening Dialogue: Why Permafrost Car
bon Matters (March 4)\n 2 .Avoiding Permafrost Thaw: Managing Temperature (
March 11)\n 3. Are Permafrost Thaw Interventions Possible? (March 18)\n 4.
Permafrost Carbon Feedback - Priorities for Research, Policy and Investment
