SUMMARY:4th Polar Prediction Workshop
LOCATION:Bremerhaven\, Germany
DESCRIPTION:Registration and abstract submission are now open for the Polar Prediction
 Workshop 2017 (PPW 2017) (http://www.polarprediction.net/meetings-calendar/
science-workshops/polar-prediction-workshop-2017/) and the 2nd Sea Ice Mode
l Intercomparison Project Meeting (2nd SIMIP Meeting).\nThe workshops will
 be held at <a href="http://www.dsm.museum/">Deutsches Schiffahrtsmuseum</a>
in Bremerhaven, Germany from 27th to 30th March 2017. Both events are join
tly organized by the Polar Climate Predictability Initiative (WCRP-PCPI), t
he Polar Prediction Project (WWRP-PPP), the Sea Ice Prediction Network (SIP
N), and the Sea Ice Model Intercomparison Project (SIMIP).\nPolar Predictio
 n Workshop 2017 (March, 27th morning - March, 29th noon)\nThe Polar Predict
ion Workshop 2017 (March, 27th morning - March, 29th noon) will start with
the public Alfred Wegener Lecture where every other year a distinguished cl
imate scientist is invited to report on emerging fields of research for sci
entific exchange. This time, the lecture entitled “A Decade of Sea Ice Pred
iction“ will be given by Cecilia Bitz (Atmospheric Science Department, Univ
ersity of Washington) who is going to review rapid advances in predicting s
kills of Arctic sea ice conditions since The Sea Ice Outlook began collecti
ng and reporting predictions in 2008.\nThe focus of the subsequent Polar Pr
ediction Workshop is on environmental prediction in the polar regions on su
bseasonal to interannual timescales, thereby helping to build a "seamless“
polar prediction community. As in previous years, sea ice prediction will p
lay a central role. Desired outcomes include the compilation of recommendat
ions for the 2017 Sea Ice Outlook season, as well as the stimulation of col
laborations in the context of the Year of Polar Prediction (YOPP; mid-2017—
 mid-2019) (http://www.polarprediction.net/yopp/).\nConfirmed keynote speake
rs are:\n* Dirk Notz\n* François Massonnet\n* Leif Toudal Pedersen.\nFor th
e Polar Prediction Workshop 2017, we invite abstracts related to polar pred
iction topics such as:\n* Predictability,\n* Modelling, data assimilation,
 and forecasting,\n* Observations,\n* Verification, and\n* User needs.\nSIMI
 P workshop (March, 29th noon - March, 30th noon)\nThe SIMIP workshop (March
, 29th noon - March, 30th noon) is devoted to discussions about the sea ice
simulations from the upcoming CMIP6 experiments (SIMIP), with three distin
ct aims:\n1. To discuss and define best practices for the evaluation of sea
-ice simulations against observations\n2. To identify and define new remote
sensing and in situ sea ice observations that will allow for improved mode
l evaluation and initialization\n3. To discuss and coordinate the analysis
of CMIP6 sea ice simulations for improved understanding of sea ice processe
s and improved sea ice projections.\nThe SIMIP workshop will primarily be a
discussion meeting with a few invited presentations to set the scene. The
SIMIP workshop is organized by the WCRP-CliC Sea ice and Climate Modeling F
orum.\nRegistration\nTo register and/or submit an abstract, please use this
  <a href="http://www.polarprediction.net/meetings-calendar/science-workshop
 s/polar-prediction-workshop-2017/registration-for-ppw2017-and-simip-worksho
ps/">online form</a> for both workshops. Abstracts can be submitted only fo
r the PPW 2017. Registration and abstract submission are open until the 30t
h of January.\nThere is some funding available to support early-career scie
ntists. If you’d like to apply for early-career travel support, please indi
cate so in the online form (http://www.polarprediction.net/typo3/#_msocom_2
).\nInformation on the venue and accomodation can be <a href="http://www.po
