SUMMARY:Karthaus course 2020 - cancelled
DESCRIPTION:With great regret we inform you that the Karthaus course planned for Septem
ber 2020 has to be cancelled. We have discussed the situation with the teac
hing staff, and all agreed that there is no way around it. There are too ma
ny uncertainties concerning the development of the covid-19 crisis, especia
lly with regard to international travel.\n \n We sincerely hope that the ne
xt Karthaus course will be in September 2021.\nThe course is meant for Ph.D
. students and provides a basic introduction to the dynamics of glaciers an
d ice sheets with a focus on ice-climate interactions. Topics include:  con
tinuum mechanics, kinematics, ice rheology, sliding and hydraulics, numeric
al modelling, polar meteorology, ice-ocean interaction, ice cores, interact
ion of ice sheets with the solid earth, glacier fluctuations, etc. \nLectur
es will be given in the morning and exercises (including computer projects)
in the afternoon. An excursion will be organised to nearby glaciers. \n \n
You can always check the Karthaus website for actual information: http://w
