SUMMARY:Model Arctic Council
LOCATION:Akureyri\, Iceland
DESCRIPTION:University of Akureyri (https://www.uarctic.org/member-profiles/iceland/878

ouncil" href="https://www.uarctic.org/organization/thematic-networks/model-
arctic-council/" data-udi="umb://document/6ca9958a2fa74b38a875563ee6eb4344"
>Model Arctic Council Thematic Network, will host a Model Arctic Counci
l (MAC) from March 22 to 27, 2020 in Akureyri, Iceland, for students intere
sted in Arctic and circumpolar affairs.\nThe MAC is an experiential learnin
g exercise, in which graduate and advanced undergraduate students from disc
iplines and universities across the Arctic region simulate the work of the
Arctic Council. The Council is the primary forum for international cooperat
ion and environmental protection in the Arctic; its working groups contribu
te to knowledge creation on the Arctic and its fragile ecosystem. In the si
mulation, each student will represent one of the eight Arctic Council Membe
r States, six Permanent Participants, or several Observers.\nTheme: The MAC
2020 simulation will focus on environmental issues, including plastics and
protected areas, and the work of two Arctic Council Working Groups—Conserv
ation of Arctic Flora and Fauna (CAFF) and Protection of the Arctic Marine
Environment (PAME)—and the Senior Arctic Officials (SAOs).\nAim: The MAC si
mulates an international negotiation on pressing challenges the Arctic regi
on and its inhabitants face, so students learn about both issues and the Ar
ctic Council itself. Second, participants develop an understanding of the i
nterplay among science, politics, and economics through practice. Finally,
the program prepares participants to engage in decision-making processes an
d to exercise leadership and diplomacy skills in the Arctic, emphasizing ac
tive listening, public speaking, and training of oral skills.\nPreparation:
Students will prepare for their participation independently by examining t
he basic documents of the Arctic Council and its working groups (e.g., Decl
arations of Ministerial meetings; Vision for the Arctic 2013), and through
courses and extra-curricular programs at their home universities. Program o
rganizers will assign roles. Each participant must also carefully examine t
he policies, strategies, agendas, and statements of her/his actor in the si
mulation.\nFunding: The University of Akureyri will cover on-site costs in
Akureyri, including shared accommodation (based on double occupancy), local
transportation, and some meals. Students are responsible for obtaining fun
ding for their transportation to/from Akureyri as well as some meals. We en
courage applicants to seek funding through their universities´ administrati
ons or countries´ ministries of foreign affairs, or organizations/instituti
ons working on the Arctic/ Arctic affairs.\nHosts: The Model Arctic Council
2020 will be hosted by the University of Akureyri, and led by Professor Ra
chael Lorna Johnstone. It will be organized with the cooperation of Iceland
ic ministries, as one of the activities of the Icelandic Chairmanship of th
e Arctic Council (2019-2021). Moreover, the event will be a collaborative e
ffort with the Model Arctic Council Thematic Network, a continuing program
organized under the University of the Arctic and led by Professors Mary Ehr
lander and Brandon Boylan at the University of Alaska Fairbanks (https://ww
w.uarctic.org/member-profiles/united-states/8840/university-of-alaska-fairb
anks).\nFor more information and to submit an application, visit the Model Arctic Co
uncil website.\nImportant Dates: \nApplications are due by November 8,
2019. \nStudents will be notified of their acceptance by December 3, 20
19.\n
