SUMMARY:Joint CLIVASH2k and AntClim21 workshop
LOCATION:Cambridge\, UK
DESCRIPTION:Please see below for details of an upcoming CLIVASH2k workshop, which will
be in collaboration with AntClim21. \n\nClimate Variability in Antarctica a
nd the Southern Hemisphere in the past 2000 years \nTuesday 4th- Wednesday
5th September 2018\nBritish Antarctic Survey, Cambridge, UK.\nCLIVASH2k is
a PAGES 2k project, which aims to improve our understanding of large scale
modes of climate variability and the mechanisms and drivers of climate chan
ge in Antarctica, the sub-Antarctic and the wider Southern Hemisphere durin
g the past 2000 years. Investigating how large-scale modes of atmospheric c
irculation, such as the Southern Annular Mode (SAM) and the Interdecadal Pa
cific Oscillation (IPO), influence the climate in Antarctica and the Southe
rn Hemisphere on a regional scale.\nAntClim21 is a SCAR research programme
which aims to deliver improved regional predictions of key elements of the
Antarctic atmosphere, ocean and cryosphere for the next 20 to 200 years and
to understand the responses of the physical and biological systems to natu
ral and anthropogenic forcing factors.\nThese two groups are coming togethe
r for a 2-day workshop investigating climate variability in Antarctica and
the Southern Hemisphere over the past 2000 years.\n \nThe workshop goals\nT
he workshop is open to all. We want to engage a broad spectrum of the scien
tific community, including paleoclimate both data gathers (such as ice core
s, lake sediments, marine records, and terrestrial records), climatologists
and climate modellers.\nWe especially encourage those who wish to actively
contribute to the CLIVASH2k and AntClim21 project goals, including contrib
ution to synthesis products and publications. The workshop will be informat
ive but be prepared to get involved!\nOur aim is to review and evaluate our
current understanding of the drivers of Southern Hemisphere climate variab
ility, through short presentations, posters and discussion sessions.\n \nRe
gister for this event\nStandard registration fee £65 per person\nStudent fe
e £15 per person (for students currently enrolled for a PhD)\nClick here to
  register: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/clivash2k-workshop-tickets-463594
12250 \nRegistration includes morning and afternoon refreshments, buffet lu
nch and an evening dinner (3rd September).\n \nTravel grants: A small numbe
r of travel grants will hopefully be available for participants. Priority w
ill be given to PhD students and those from developing countries. Please in
dicate when registering if you require financial assistance.\n \nSpecial is
sue: In association with this workshop we have a special issue of Geoscienc
es. We invite you to submit high quality original research articles and rev
iews on climate variability in Antarctica and the Southern Hemisphere over
the last millennia.\nFor more information please visit the website or conta
