SUMMARY:Emergent Risks and Extreme Events scoping workshop
LOCATION:United Nations University
DESCRIPTION:Scoping Workshop of Knowledge-Action Network (KAN) on “Emergent Risks and E
xtreme Events – Reducing Disaster Risks under Environmental Change –“\nObje
ctives:\nDisasters continue to rise both in developing and in industrialize
d countries. This is the direct result of environmental events that are ext
reme or that have extreme impacts on economic, health, infrastructure, soci
al, and other systems. However, there is a fundamental lack of understandin
g of integrated human, ecological, and physical processes shaping risk casc
ades and feedbacks in the context of the Anthropocene. Multi-hazard interac
tions and cascading impacts including those involving technological hazards
and social/political impacts are recognized but not yet supported by a sys
tematic science agenda. The full solution space for disaster risk reduction
includes reflection and redirection of development priorities, practices a
nd trajectories in the context of global environmental change.\n\nThis Know
ledge-Action Network (KAN) on Emergent Risks and Extreme Events aims to def
ine an interaction network between science partners and wider stakeholders
to allow a structured integration and synthesis of expertise, professional
and local knowledge to accelerate action on multi-hazard and compound event
s and so to support a transformation of development towards an equitable, s
ustainable and resilient future. Scoping workshop aims to discuss on possib
le research priorities, practical collaboration and engagement of stakehold
ers in the research themes and near-term governance of the KAN. \nDate: Wed
