SUMMARY:UNIS summer school: The Arctic Ocean and the marginal ice zone (MIZ). Interdisciplinary research, management practices and policy developments.
LOCATION:Longyearbyen\, Norway
DESCRIPTION:UNIS (http://www.unis.no/summer-school-announcement-2017/)is one of the pa
rtners in the summer school “The Arctic Ocean and the marginal ice zone (MI
Z). Interdisciplinary research, management practices and policy development
s.”\nApply by 8 May 2017!\n \nBackground\nThe consequences of climate chang
e are particularly evident in the Arctic. In recent years, we have witnesse
d significant changes and reductions in Arctic sea ice distribution and vol
ume. Seized as an opportunity, plans are being made for expansion of econom
ic activities such as shipping, fisheries, petroleum extraction and deep-se
a mining. Changes in ice cover and distribution will also have consequences
for national and international management regimes.\nThis new situation rep
resents challenges for scientists, managers and policy makers and for the p
rivate sector. More and better communication between different parts is req
uired, and the best way forward needs to be further developed for sound man
agement and sustainable use of the Arctic oceans’ vast renewable and non-re
newable resources.\nPractical information\nThe summer school takes place in
Longyearbyen from 31 July until 5 August 2017, and the main target group i
s PhD students and postdocs. In some cases, students with a MSc degree or e
quivalent and with special professional qualifications, for example from th
e private sector industry or from other relevant institutions may also part
icipate. The relevance of current studies, including personal motivation an
d relevant experiences are important selection criteria.\nThe international
summer school 2017 will have a multi- and cross-disciplinary thematic appr
oach to meet challenges and opportunities related to governance of the Arct
ic Ocean’s marginal ice zone. Scientists and experts from Norway and abroad
will contribute to the summer school 2017 with lectures and with interacti
ve student and teacher sessions. The participating students will be challen
ged to start drafting a peer-reviewed publication for an international jour
nal.\nThe participants must cover their own transport to Longyearbyen, Sval
bard and return and accommodation during transit. Non-Norwegian participant
s must bring their passports for travel to Svalbard. Participation at the s
ummer school is free and the organizers will cover accommodation, lunch and
dinners and excursions during the scheduled stay in Svalbard.\nHow to appl
y\nUp to 30 students from different countries and with different expertise
and experience will be selected. Applications shall include a CV and a lett
er which describes a rationale and justification for the application. A ten
tative title of a poster to present current studies should be included in t
he application.\nApplications are sent to the Norwegian Scientific Academy
for Polar Research (NVP), att. Office Manager Jorge Kristiansen at This ema
