SUMMARY:Short course "Modern snow measurement methods – theory and practice"
LOCATION:Sodankylä\, Finland
DESCRIPTION:We would like to announce a short course "Modern snow measurement methods –
theory and practice" in Sodankylä, Finland in 10 – 11 February 2017.\nThe
course is aimed to academics who teach methods in snow science.\nApplicatio
 n by email to leena.leppanen at fmi.fi (http://ilmatieteenlaitos.fi/)  and
schneebeli at <a href="http://www.slf.ch/">slf.ch</a>\nDeadline for applica
tion: 11 January 2017.\nMore information of the course below.\nInstructors\
nDr. Martin Schneebeli, WSL Institute for Snow and Avalanche Research SLF,
schneebeli at slf.ch (http://www.slf.ch/)  MSc. Leena Leppänen, FMI, leena.
 leppanen at <a href="http://ilmatieteenlaitos.fi/" style="text-align: justi
 fy;">fmi.fi</a>  \nCosts: 250 € (includes accommodation for 3 nights, meals
and course material)\nTarget group\nAcademics teaching methods in snow sci
ence\nGoals\n- Understanding the transformations of snow from atmospheric p
recipitation towards a metamorphic rock\n- Shape, size and microstructure o
f snow: beyond traditional snow classification and why this is necessary to
capture the essential snow physical properties\n- Measuring snow: a system
atic approach from the large to the small scale. Properties and methods dis
cussed: water equivalent, density, specific surface area, correlation lengt
h, hardness and mechanical properties, shape, grain size, thermal conductiv
ity, metamorphism.\n- Physical principles behind techniques: direct and ind
irect measurement principles, assumptions and their influence on measuremen
 ts (critical discussion)\nSchedule\nFriday, 10. Feb. 2017\nMorning: Backgro
und theory for snow physics and metamorphism, basic concepts of measuring m
ethods\nAfternoon: first field block (density, SSA, snow water equivalent,
traditional grain shape and size, casting of snow)\nEvening: discussion of
background material and field measurements\nSaturday, 11. Feb. 2017\nMornin
g: Theory (Physical principles behind measurement techniques\nAfternoon: se
cond field block (SnowMicroPen, Near-infrared photography, thermal conducti
vity), Snow measurement program at FMI (Anna Kontu, Leena Leppänen)\nEvenin
g: discussion of results second field block, course evaluation\nDinner and
sauna\nMaterials\n- Paper recommendations and presentations will be sent to
participants before short course\n- Instruments will be available on site\
n- Please bring your own laptop. Programs for data evaluation will be distr
ibuted before the course\nVenue\nArctic Research Centre of Finnish Meteorol
 ogical Institute\nhttp://fmiarc.fmi.fi \nTravel\nParticipants organize trav
els to Sodankylä. Route: from Helsinki to Rovaniemi by plane or train, and
from Rovaniemi to Sodankylä by bus.\nRovaniemi airport is the closest, but
Ivalo and Kittilä airports are also available. Last two has less bus connec
tions to Sodankylä, and therefore rental car from airport is recommended. F
innair and Norwegian are flying to Rovaniemi.\nThe train station is in Rova
niemi. Train schedule and tickets <a href="https://www.vr.fi/cs/vr/en/front
page">https://www.vr.fi/cs/vr/en/frontpage</a> \nThere are direct bus conne
ctions from Rovaniemi train station and Rovaniemi airport to Sodankylä. Bus
schedule between Rovaniemi and Sodankylä https://matkahuolto.fi/en/ \nPick
-up from Sodankylä bus station will be organized.\nClothing\nAs the course
is to a great extent based on fieldwork, proper clothing is essential. Pack
ing list will be provided later.\nHousing\nThe housing will be in Sodankylä
at the Arctic Research Centre of Finnish Meteorological Institute with dir
ect access to the field sites. The guest houses have own bedrooms, common b
athroom, living room, WiFi, and kitchen.\nMeals\nBreakfasts, lunches and di
nners are in cafeteria Niesta at the Arctic Research. In addition, guest ho
uses have full kitchen facilities.\nApplication deadline 11 January 2017\n
