SUMMARY:Workshop on International Access to Research Infrastructure in the Arctic
LOCATION:Online
DESCRIPTION:                \nWorkshop on International Access to Research Infrastructu
 re in the Arctic at ASSW 2021\nMarch 23, 2021 9:00 - 15:00 GMT\nPurpose of
the workshop: Initiating dialogue and developing networks that facilitate a
ccess for international scientists to national research facilities and infr
astructure in the Arctic (also referred to as “transnational” or “cross-bor
der” access): Identifying challenges, best practices, and next steps.\nPhys
ical access to research infrastructure in the Arctic – polar research vesse
ls, stations, and aircraft - is essential for polar science. Knowledge abou
t the availability and services of existing platforms is key to selecting t
he appropriateresearch site and experimental design for projects. In practi
ce, this means that operators and managers of infrastructure need to cultiv
ate a strong communications effort with the scientific community. Communica
tion is also paramount in outlining each platform’s guidelines, which ensur
es well-prepared and efficient visitors. Facilitating this exchange of info
rmation and available space for international access is challenging at the
national level. Adding an international dimension to operations makes it ev
en more challenging, especially since funding mechanisms need to be in plac
e to implement links between scientists and infrastructure.\nThese topics w
ill be explored through a series of presentations and interactive break-out
sessions to identify major challenges, best practices, and next steps for
matching scientists and infrastructure, providing international access, and
sharing knowledge. Questions that will be explored include:\n\n - What are
the most urgent logistical needs and locations for polar research in the n
ext 10 years?\n - What are the scientific and logistical possibilities and
challenges for implementing shared\ninternational access?\n - What mechanis
ms or exchange modes can be envisaged to coordinate networks of polar resea
rch\ninfrastructure (e.g. vessels, stations, aircraft) at an international
level? Will these mechanisms\nprovide access to all researchers while conti
nuing to recognize respective research infrastructures\nas national assets?
Facilitator: Forum of Arctic Research Operators (FARO)\nParticipants: Users
and operators of Arctic infrastructure platforms, including but not limite
d to ARICE, INTERACT, APECS, the EPB, Isaaffik, SIOS, PAG and others.\nRegi
stration (https://assw2021.pt/) for the Arctic Science Summit Week 2021 for
early-bird rates is still possible by 7 March 2021.\nParticipants are kind
ly asked also to register in advance by e-mail to: <a href="mailto:faro-arc
