International polar weekends, held at the American Museum of Natural History in New York City in 2007, 2008, and 2009, brought visitors face-to-face with scientists, explorers, artists, and performers from Greenland, Norway and Canada, and the United States. Project goals were to broaden public understanding of science through a focus on the polar regions, convey the excitement of polar research, demonstrate the critical role of the poles in global climate change with a focus on the dramatic changes that are already underway, increase understanding of what can be done to mitigate and adapt to global warming, and develop appreciation for careers in science and science education.
