Making sure you clearly and concisely share your research with others is often a challenge. Giving a conference presentation, whether as an engaging talk or a beautiful poster, takes practice and a little extra work. Here we share with you some resources on designing your posters and presentations, as well as how to best use the time you have with people while discussing your research.

Poster Presentations and Poster Sessions

For a Poster Presentation, there are several programs you can use – the most popular, but probably not the best is Microsoft PowerPoint. Others that are nice are Adobe Illustrator or In-Design and Pages for Mac. Below are a few links to resources to help you prepare your poster. We also recommend you watch the APECS webinar by Kristin Timm about designing your poster... its really great because it talks about choosing a color scheme and fonts and all those fun things.

See here an example (APECS Poster).

Oral Presentations

For an Oral Presentation, again, be sure to check the email from the conference organizers to make sure you are giving an oral. Also check the amount of time you have, the computer facilities available (ie Mac or PC, your own computer or theirs, will there be sound, can you use animations and movies in your presentation, will there be internet access if you need it, do you need to upload your presentation ahead of time, if so, when, etc.). Below we will add a few links to resources for creating a good presentation. We also recommend watching Dave Carlson's 'Giving your best presentation' webinar because it gives you some great tips like making sure people in all areas of the audience can see your slides, limit the amount of text, remember that some people are color blind, presenting data using graphs that are active, and lots more.
