Helmholtz Graduate School for Polar and Marine Research (POLMAR)

Fostered by the Helmholtz Initiative and Networking Fund, the graduate school POLMAR provides a structured qualification programme for PhD students at the Alfred Wegener Institute as supplement to their individual research work.

Applications for a regular POLMAR membership are welcome at any time – there is no limit to the number of applications we accept!

PhD scholarships at POLMAR are granted through stipends, enabling the students to exclusively work on their research project. The stipend is payed without any taxes and ranges between 1.000 EUR and 1.365 EUR, depending on the personal qualification and marital status. Additional funding for children can also be granted. At the moment, the scholarship amounts to 1.357 EUR (basic amount) plus 103,- EUR (material expenses grant). 

POLMAR will offer three core curricula in polar and marine research (the central pillars) along a three-year PhD term
transferable skills, disciplinary and interdisciplinary approaches, theoretical and practical training
